What Is a Prerelease Event?
Prerelease events are organized by local game stores in partnership with Wizards of the Coast. You receive a Prerelease Pack to build a sealed deck (no pre-built deck required) and play against other attendees in a relaxed, low-stakes environment. It’s one of the best ways to try a new set before it officially launches, and you get to keep all the cards you open.
MTG Hobbit prereleases run the full week of August 7–13, so most stores will offer multiple sessions across Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Check your local store for their specific event times.
Why This Prerelease Is Worth Going To
The Hobbit is one of the most anticipated Magic sets in years. It follows the massive success of The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth and brings Bilbo, Thorin, Smaug, and the One Ring to Standard for the first time. Prerelease promos include a Bilbo, Luckwearer card for Commander Party participants — a solid incentive to show up.

How to Register
Contact your local store directly to register for their prerelease event — most require advance sign-up and have limited seats. You can also use the Wizards of the Coast store locator at locator.wizards.com to find every registered MTG event location near you.
What to Bring
- A Wizards account or DCI number if your store uses it for organized play tracking
- Basic lands (some stores provide these, some don’t — check ahead)
- Card sleeves — you’ll want to protect what you pull
- Payment for the event entry fee (typically $25–$35 per prerelease)
